La Catrina to me represents the believe that human beings have a place to go in the afterlife. There are more options than heaven and hell. Who knows how fun it can be?

Women of beauty are very common, but what is very uncommon is to find a woman who is completely disposed to do as she pleases and to be responsible for herself.

It is hard to feel vulnerable and to let your emotions ride you. It is dangerous to tell someone you like that you love them. We have learned this from experiences and don't want to get hurt by telling people that we love them.

However, when the feeling is mutual you can actually tell your lovedone that you love them even with your own hair.

In this painting, I use a passionate and fertile red background and a very sensual blue for the top. The lettering are white and tell the story of habits that were acquired over a year of long distance romance. It is nice to reflect that this very ideas and thoughts are part of my head as ar my own hairs.

When I was a child, I heard the word "Fiesta" so may times that by the time that I was 15 or so, this word became part of who I am today.

Before traveling to many parts of the world, I never understood why "Fiesta" was such a big deal. However, after living in other parts of the world, I soon realized how happy and colorful Mexican people really are.

"Fiesta" is so engrained into our culture that even in death we still keep the party going.

In this picture you will see the motifs of mexican tradition, the La Catrina with eher fancy hat is a symbol of the class conscious society that we are. The guitar and maracas are simple musical instruments that create a good vibe to party. There is also the traditional sarape on one of the male calaveras(skulls) and a traditional hat on all male calaveras. There is also papel picado(colorful paper with cutout designs), a church, and cactus under a starry night. Everyone, has a good time around the fire, even after death.

The small town of Tzintzuntzan, capital of the purepecha empire, is located in the state of michoacan.

After the Spaniards arrived into Mexico and allied with the aztecs, the whole mexican territory began to crumble due to political instability. Many original ethnic groups were wiped out completely either by religion, force, disease or slavery.

Tzintzuntzan was no different. When the Spaniards arrived, they found Tanganxoan II in power. Soon afer, in securing power, they burned Tanganxoan II alive and began conversion to catholicism. This is the dark history of this little town and the great purepecha empire.

However, it is this very small church that my family members have dedicated so much love and devotion. It represents more of my reality. My happy memories, my traditions and my heritage. This frozen memories follows me everywhere I go-- like the peace after a violent storm so it stands this little church.

In the state of Michoacan, Mexico, lives a group of people called purepecha. They are know for their fierceness, friendliness and hospitality. They fended off against the fiercest Aztec emperors. In fact, they did not know of defeat until the Spaniards arrived with their modern weapons.

In this painting, I have chosen to display the very foundation of Purepecha life. Here, on a more civil note, a serene young mother carries her infant child on her back attesting to her motherly devotion. She also carries out her many other chores while teaching by example.

Here she is selecting tomatillos(small green tomato-like vegetable) and peeling off their skin. As if learning by example, her younger daughter plays with the tomatillos while she looks onto other things that distract her. I have chosen to dress up the little girl in red, green, and touches of white to represent the three colors of the Mexican flag.

The three men shown here are: The infamous Pancho Villa, Emiliano Zapata, and President Lazaro Cardenas. They led lives of continuous battle to honor this three words that represented the very foundation of an oppressed and suffering Mexican Republic.

I have chosen to put Emiliano Zapata in the forefront because the struggle for a free mexico still continues till today. You can see in his face the an unwavering determination to fight for freedom, but you can also notice that in doing so he is growing exhausted. The gazed is fixed on you because that is how he would have done.

Pancho Villa in his royal blue uniform looks down trying to figure out a strategy to further the cause. He who was an unmoved warrior seems to have tears in his eyes. Mexico's war against tyranny is far from being won.

Lazaro Cardenas, El Tata(father), one of Mexico's beloved presidents reflects. He may be a bit ashamed of our foreign policies. He who fought hard to keep Mexico a modern and safe country feels ashamed of todays security situation in Mexico. He never traveled with body guards and would travel to remote places in mexico by donkey to make sure that people were heard.

The background is gray, and the heroes sitting in the darkness, only their faces show light. Perhaps a sign of hope for Mexico.

The day of the death, celebrated in Mexico, is a very festive day that take place on the second of november. It celebrates the return of our loved ones from eternity to earth. We great them at their graves and offer them food, drink, and anything that they enjoyed while living. Mexicans await their loved ones at the graves in a festive manner.

The piece, here displayed, represents the well-know Catrina. She has dressed up and is ready come from eternity and visit her loved ones. She is not sad to come from eternal rest. She is jubilant. She is wearing a large hat adorned with many kinds of flowers and tow large feathers. She is dressed up to celebrate. She is also wearing her most fashionable smile. Waiting had been waiting an eternity for this day to come.
